DIY Floating Pool Candle & Lights

It’s all about family and friends,

and time spent together.

But,

when you can’t be there,

it’s nice to symbolise it I think.

There’s a party on this weekend and we won’t be there. {I can’t believe it!}

I decided to to make some floating pool candles and lights,

so we can celebrate it too,

under the same moon,

just 697km away.

So… those special people know,

how hard it is to not be there and how much we will be missing them.

If we were there, we’d be dressing up in the theme of 3.

For Pippa and Tom (who is the namesake of my blog).

Pippa is turning 3 and Tom would be 30, hence the theme.

So I’m dressing our home in 3’s this weekend.

For them.

Here’s how you can make your own floating pool lights.

Let’s start with the super easy one first.

DIY floating pool lights

You will need:

20 cm lantern with inbuilt light (I got mine from the Reject Shop)

Round plastic container with a flat base (mine was 17cm dia x 5cm high)

Batteries

It’s super easy.

Make up the lanterns, according to package directions, add the batteries required, then place in the shallow flat bottomed plastic container. Place in the pool. Don’t forget to turn the lights on when it gets dark.

You can also add fishing line and weights to keep them in position if you want to. (Other wise they will move around the pool which is also kinda nice). See Step 3-4 below below for instructions, I drilled a small hole on two opposite sides at the top of the plastic container, then threaded fishing line through to the depth of the pool, adding a heavy sinker and tying off both sides)

Here’s how to make the flower floating candle, with 3 hibiscus.

You will need:

Plastic round plates (I used 18cm dia.)

Round flat bottomed plastic container (I used 17cm dia.)

Small condiment sized container (to hold the tea light)

Tea lights

Greenery from your garden, (I used bamboo, rhapis and hibiscus)

Glue (I used Selleys Glass Silicone Sealant)

Fishing line

Heavy sinkers

Punch (I used a surfboard fin key, but a metal skewer would also work)

Scissors

Step 1: Punch holes in the plastic plate, with the fin key or metal skewer, see pic below.

Step 2: Punch two holes on opposite side of the plate, just on the lip, this is to thread the fishing line through.

Step 3-4: Measure the depth of the pool where you want the candles to sit, then cut double that length with a bit extra to tie off each side of the plate. (eg: the depth of our pool was 1.2m depth, so I cut 2.5m of fishing line)

Insert fishing line through one hole and tie off securely with a knot, then thread a heavy sinker or tie a weight to the middle of your length of line (in my case 1.2 m), then thread through the hole on the opposite side of the plate and tie off securely.

Step 5: Turn the plate right side up and add glue around the lip of the plate.

Step 6: Join the plate and the plastic container together. (Note: I did this with the plate on the bottom, it was easier to handle)

Let dry for a few minutes.

Step 7: Turn the other way up, (container at the bottom and plate at the top.)

Step 8-9:  Add glue to the base of the small plastic container (this is to fit the tea light), then glue as per the pic below.

Step 9 Note: You can add some water here, through the holes you have created, so the plants can have a drink while they float, (I made one a little bit larger to do this, and filled about 1.5cm of water), don’t add too much or the candle will sink.

Step 10-14: Add the greenery in each corner, then fill in with bamboo, lastly add the flowers.
Add the tea light candle and you are done. See pics below.

Place in the pool and light the tea light candle when it gets dark. Enjoy.

Note: Never leave a naked flame unattended. (Our pool is too cold, so no one will be swimming in it this weekend, it’s the perfect time for lights and flowers to grace it’s water.) These floating pool candles would be a great idea for a wedding or special function on mass, also)

So this weekend, we’ll be watching the floating pool candles and lights.

And wondering if we get the award for best dressed in the theme of 3 for Pippa and Tom?

And,

wishing we could be there.

And,

sending lots of hugs and kisses.

Even though we are not there,

look to the sky,

we’ll be celebrating under the same moon.

Happy birthday Pippa and Tom. xxx
