DIY Origami Crane Mobile

Did you know the crane is a mystical creature that’s believed to live for a thousand years?

In Japanese, Chinese and Korean culture the crane represents good fortune and longevity.

I made this origami crane mobile for my little guys room, with a stick, some cotton and some paper,

…you can do it too,

It’s easy and it’s got soul.

I love things that come with meaning…

You will need:

A stick

Wool

Yellow cotton

Needle

11 x A4 sheets of black paper

Scissors

I first saw a thousand of these cranes folded and displayed on a ceiling when I was in a shop in Bali.

Totally awesome…

The tradition is, that if one folded 1000 cranes, one’s wish would come true. Others give these as gifts usually in strings of 25 x 40 cranes each.

Also totally awesome.

How to assemble

1. To make the hanger…wrap wool closely around a stick, (I used this black two tone so it looks like I’ve gone to a lot of trouble to make it go from black to grey to white, but the string did it all!) Wrap closely around the stick to make your hanger.

2. Cut black paper into squares, then use this easy video to fold I found on You tube.

I made 11 cranes. (I think I’ll add to this to make it 1000, it was quite therapeutic to make at night while watching tv.)

3. Thread a needle with some cotton (I used yellow) and insert into the middle of the crane, then secure with a knot and cut away any excess.

4. String all your cranes with extra thread than you think you will need, so you can position at different levels.

5. Tie a length of wool to each end of the hanger and place on a hook against the wall, then start positioning each crane at various heights and tie with a loose knot.

6. Once all the cranes are positioned and you are happy with the positioning, secure tightly and cut away any extra thread.

7. Hang up using a cup hook.

Like any mum…

I wish for my son, fortune and longevity.

Japanese legend says that anyone who folds 1000 origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane…

I might add more origami cranes to this mobile and make it to 1000 by the end of the year.

Sometimes…

though…

you don’t even need origami cranes to make wishes come true…

My little sister has done just that…

Cue the proud sister…(that’s me!)

Her and her husband have a fabulous International Food and Wine Festival on this weekend…

Called…

Vinoparadiso check it out here

And she’s just an ordinary mum like me…

Proves dreams can come true with hard work and goals.

If you are in Sydney this weekend, head down and say hello, I’ll be the proud sister sipping wine!

Do you believe in legends or just hard work?

Thanks Trish, yes 1000 will be quite a big task, but I think it will look way cool. I’ll see how I go, if not, I’m happy with it as is.
